ONLY A WRITER COULD PULL THIS OFF
From an otherwise immensely sad New Yorker article on David Foster Wallace:
While dating Mary Karr, DFW had had himself tattooed: a heart surrounding "Mary." Alas the impermanence of love posed a later quandary, when he fell for his prospective wife. Lesser mortals opt for lasers or insouciance:
"Wallace put a strike-out through Mary's name on his tattoo and an asterisk under the heart; farther down he added another asterisk and Karen's name, turning his arm into a living footnote."
