THE LAST RECOGNIZABLY HUMAN WEDDING
The registries were stumped
hence the mitten gift pile
knit in seed-bank logos
Earth Day flags:
U.N.-prohibited patterns
of unduly agitating hope
TOAST! TOAST! TOAST!
Like proto-moles, we palm
enormous canning jars:
a high-proof distillate
of root vegetable,
root garni
aloll in silty dregs
Mouth poised in endless joke
from rehearsal soirée,
the sodden bride moues mold
green lipstick
Canapés at aquarium
had promised nostalgic
oppression of others
LUNGFISH BOOM-BOOM!
We tittered at tankmurk,
Deadeye's decades of mateless mire
Now on cue is the Groom
RADISH VODKA!
while nearest the exit -
a face to stop a clock -
sits Death, not well-disguised
as ancient Albanian aunt
She's split, festive/funereal
christening bonnet and black shawl
A canny broad, she'll drink
to anything, even the thumb
