TODAY'S REASONS TO LIVE

1. The Philippe Halsman photograph of Dali with Rhinoceros.

2. In 1942, the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus presented The Circus Polka: a ballet of 50 bedecked, bedizened and betutued elephants and 50 dancers. Balanchine had agreed to choreograph, and snagged Stravinsky to score. Balanchine's version of that conversation:

B: "I wonder if you'd like to do a little ballet with me."
Stravinsky: "For whom?"
B: "For some elephants."
Stravinsky: "How old?"
B: "Very young."
Stravinsky: "All right. If they are very young elephants, I will do it.”
