UNENFORCEABLE PROMISE

The party of the first part
to this most personal service contract –
departed

Scratch that clause
on successors and assigns

Our vow to love forever?
Void ab initio
per the statute of frauds

- not to impugn or imply
a deceptive intent

The existence of mutual mistake
- a flaw in formation -
is not material

yet loop-de-loops
through my head

A closed track clacks and shuttles
an infinitely regressive plea
v. renvoi

This was prompted by qaartsiluni's upcoming Words of Power issue.

  1. Are you going to submit, then?

  2. Dale: what a novel characterization for legal language. Between the bungled Latin terms and tone-deaf lawyers, most legal writing is not art but assault.

Dave: The theme is calling to me, obviously, but I haven't yet decided what to submit. I need to stretch towards some new mantras.

  3. :-) shorthand for "beautifully done," I guess. Beautiful, no, legal language is not often that.
