ZOO STORY

An avidity of owls
drew the eye: jumpsuited
keeper, long tongs and

mice in a galvanized pail

Mouse by mouse was staged: supine,
sagging, nudged into place where
branches crossed, scant fur

snagged on the real wood splinters

tails--somehow--
not nailed down, but bent
moving with the wind

Owl heads swiveled on castors--
cadmium socket raptures

After, we could have seen them
containerized for
their long journey, we

hope ourselves to return--
indigestible
pellets of resurrection
